Veronica Tyler Exhibit

img521 - Copy.jpg

A look at the career of Veronica Tyler, a Black opera singer and native of Baltimore, Maryland through items donated by her family to the Eubie Blake Cultural Center. Tyler rose to prominence during the 1960s in New York, traveled the world and brought her talent and dedication back to help guide the next generation of Black musicians.

In honor of Tyler's career and passion as an opera singer, our exhibit follows the structure of a two act production. In Act I we will cover her early career, the hardships she faced as a Black woman in the arts and her triumphs in New York City.

A short Intermission will follow, introducing you to the places Tyler traveled, the people that she met and the strong friendships she developed during her career.

Act II follows Veronica Tyler's later career, focusing heavily on the work she did for her community and for students as well as who she was to her family and friends. In this section we collected photographs and playbills from productions worked on by her students and events she headlined for the support of community oriented programs and relief funds.

Finally, in our Coda, we reflect on who Veronica Tyler was, as a Black woman, a mother, a grandmother, and a musician. And how her work left a lasting impact, not only on her family, but on many others for years to come.

We hope that you enjoy this evening’s production and share Veronica Tyler’s life and legacy with your own family and friends!
